A fantasy action drama anime series animated by Kyoto_Animation, and is not only their first original anime, but also the first project made solely by themselves. Previously, the studio had mostly assisted other studios on various anime. The series started off as an OVA originally known as and released under the title Munto on March 18, 2003, which was followed by a second episode on April 23, 2005. After remaining dormant for a few years, the OVA was adapted into a 2009 TV series under its current name Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai, which is now the name of the franchise. The TV series first six episodes retell the story of the OVAs with some new scenes, while the last three episodes are new material that conclude the story. All incarnations of the series are directed and created by Kigami Yoshiji. Character designs and animation were handled by Aratani_Tomoe. When the OVAs were turned into a TV series, the entire voice cast was notably recast with more well known and experienced seiyuus replacing the originals. It is set on an Earth that is mostly like the real world, but with one major divergence in human history. In the past, humans were attacked by humanoid beings that fell from the sky. These beings were dependent on the power of Akuto, human emotion converted into magical energy. These beings attacked the humans but, as Akuto was derived from humans, ended up depriving them of their power source. These beings decided to mine Akuto from other parallel universes and used that power to create a heavenly empire in the sky, but humans eventually fought back and drove away the Heavenly Beings, who ended up splitting the world into two dimensions, Earth and the Heavenly Kingdom. Although they are right next to each other, the people on Earth can't see the Heavenly Kingdom and interaction between them is forbidden. However, Hidaka Yumemi, an otherwise normal teen girl is able to see this Heavenly Kingdom and is the only person on Earth who can do so, and finds herself staring off into the clouds. Whenever she tries to explain to others what she sees, she is dismissed and regarded as a strange girl with questionable sanity. Not even her close friends, Ono Ichiko and Imamura Suzume, can see what she sees, but they still accept her nonetheless. Yumemi tries her best to live a quiet and normal life, but she secretly is always troubled by her visions and her uncertainty over her future. One day, she is finally able to directly interact with her visions of the Heavenly Kingdom when Munto arrives on Earth. Munto is the king of one of the many kingdoms within the Heavenly Kingdom, the Magic Kingdom, and he needs Yumemi to assist him in saving the Heavenly Kingdom, which is running out of Akuto. The lack of Akuto is causing the Kingdom to collapse and alongside this apocalyptic crisis, political tensions are flaring up as the various kingdoms are starting to war with each other over resources. Yumemi must now make a decision on whether she should keep living as she always has or accept the newfound responsibility she has been saddled with.
